Why I Compile this
Bibliography
I grew
up in the Altoona, Pennsylvania area
and the
Pennsylvania Railroad had a profound impact on my family. My
father, many of my uncles, and some of my cousins worked in the PRR
shops. Both of my grandfathers spent their entire working
lives with the PRR, one as a locomotive engineer (engineman) and the
other in the shops. They all worked hard and were happy to do
it. The mighty PRR dominated the economy of the Altoona area
as well as the hearts and minds of its employees. The company
provided living wages and health and retirement benefits to support the
families of its employees. Those employees were loyal to the
company and proud of their high-quality workmanship. When my
family took a rare vacation, usually to visit extended family in
Philadelphia or Pittsburgh, we road the Pennsylvania Railroad free of
charge with company passes. Likewise when I was in college I
road the Pennsylvania Railroad between Altoona and Pittsburgh when I
came home for visits. My family members were heartbroken, as
were many other people in the Altoona area, when the mighty PRR fell
into oblivion.
I enjoy
reading about the company and
viewing
photographs of PRR equipment, settings, and personnel.
However, I do not claim to be a scholar or expert in the
history, technology, or any other aspect of the Pennsylvania
Railroad. I compile this bibliography because I enjoy doing
it. Perhaps it is a way to connect and pay tribute to members
of my family who were part of the company.

About the
Bibliography
- This is a
selected bibliography, not
comprehensive.
- Publications were selected because I
thought they
were interesting and worthwhile.
- Annotations were written with the
publications in
hand or from notations made with the publications in hand.
- Annotations
are intended to be descriptive in
nature, not critical.
- Entries without annotations may have
been
produced from searches of library catalogs and other
databases.
- This bibliography is an ongoing
project.
- The K4s
and GG1 photographs were scanned from
snapshots I took several years ago I believe at the Altoona Railroaders
Museum. Hence the poor quality.
Acknowledgements
I
could never have produced this bibliography
without
the help of the interlibrary loan services staff members at South
Dakota State University's Hilton M. Briggs Library. Over the
years they obtained for me many of the publications listed in the
bibliography. Those staff members included: Mary Lou Berry,
Mary Kraljic, Elizabeth Fox, Mary Caspers-Graper, and Rachel
Higgins. In addition, I am grateful to the staff members of
all libraries who have preserved and made available the printed history
of the PRR.
