Marvin P. Riley
1918 - 1985

Professor Riley earned a bachelor's degree from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL in 1942; served in the United States Air Force 1942-1945; did graduate work at the University of Wisconsin 1945-1947; completed an M.A. in 1950 and a PhD in 1968 in sociology and anthropology at the University of Missouri.  He first began teaching at South Dakota State University in 1950, where he enriched thousands of students until his retirement in 1984.  He also worked with the South Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, conducting research and publishing extensively about South Dakota Hutterite colonies.

I had the privilege of being one of Professor Riley's thousands of students.  It was an incredible experience for me.  He made sociological theory and the history of the discipline come alive through sharing his extraordinary knowledge and recounting stories or recollections of interactions with numerous theorists and practitioners throughout his long and productive career.  He cultivated an enthusiasm for learning within me, especially for learning sociology.  I am grateful to have known him.

Biographical information was taken from Professor Riley's obituary, published in The Brookings Daily Register, October 30, 1985, page 2.
